Microsoft announced Microsoft Fabric as a platform to bring your data into the era of AI. So does that mean we no longer need MDM or does it mean we need it even more? Let’s take a look.

Microsoft Fabric is a huge step forward for enterprise analytics. It offers both integrated a data access. So is that all it takes? Just install fabric, import your data and you are AI enabled.

Well, not exactly.

Enterprise data generally comes from many different sources and the data in each source was created by different people at different times for different purposes. In data lake house terminology, this would be bronze medallion data and at best it’s inconsistent, incomplete and duplicated and at worst it’s unusable. Let’s take an example.

In different systems you have J. Smith, Joe Smith and Joseph Smith.

Is that three customers or two or maybe just one? If you don’t know and your AI doesn’t know, then you are already at risk and you may not even know it. You have multiple abbreviations for the same sales region. Is your AI resolving that under the surface?

Can you be sure? You have the same raw material listed with different descriptions and different systems? How can you do materials planning? Experts in the enterprise could certainly match and standardize all So that’s just not practical.

Any data that is not properly matched and standardized across sources risks incorrect interpretation and that is especially true with AI where the lineage between source and output can be lost in the process.

So what can we do? Well, that’s where master data management comes in, but not the traditional MDM solutions that can be fixed and narrow in their approach, which means they are generally slow and expensive to implement and result in limited coverage. That would not be a good partner to Microsoft Fabric. But, prophecy MDM takes a different approach.
