Data Governance Best Practices

Video Transcript:

One is the notion of “don’t boil the ocean.” Right? Focus on business value. Focus on business priorities.

And grow slowly, incrementally over time. Don’t try to do too much. Governance is important. It can be very, very daunting and tje scope can get massive very, very quickly.

But if you’re focused on high priority use cases, double down on where you’re gonna make the most impact, it’s a great way to start. So don’t boil the ocean. So have the business drive absolutely totally agree. Keep it prioritized, focused on business outcomes.

Don’t try to boil the ocean very, very important. If you stick to those three things, I think you’ll have some success.

Part of the answer to that is, somewhat defining governance versus something like MDM. So MDM and data stewardship are a sub-component of governance. Governance is about defining and persisting those, rules and policies that are gonna govern your data, all your data, MDM is about monitoring and enforcement.

Stewardship is about monitoring and enforcement.

The story that I tell my clients often is that you can do data governance without MDM, but you cannot do MDM without data governance. So if you’re focused on MDM, data governance is absolutely a foundational component of an MDM strategy. Well, MDM is inherently a business practice. It’s a business discipline, as is data governance. Right? You can be very effective at data governance without investing a lot of money in software.
