Didn’t Gartner® retire its Magic Quadrant™ report for Master Data Management Solutions?
Yes, Gartner® announced in 2022 that it would retire the Magic Quadrant™ for Master Data Management Solutions. It reversed that decision with the publication of a new Magic Quadrant for MDM in April 2026. Gartner initially decided to retire the MQ for MDM because it assessed the MDM software market as stable and mature with little meaningful differentiation among vendors.
Gartner saw MDM as such a basic, unchanging part of enterprise data architecture that it no longer felt the need to produce a Magic Quadrant. However, in the years since the last MQ for MDM was published, the software landscape has changed dramatically.
The advent of generative AI and its applications — especially agentic or augmented data management — hold big implications for master data management and are pushing it to new frontiers. This led many data leaders to question whether Gartner would bring back the MQ for MDM. As Profisee CDO Malcolm Hawker said in his commentary on Gartner’s initial decision to retire the MQ for MDM, “…MDM is on the verge of progressing beyond the hype to something far more meaningful.”
This latest MDM MQ is testament to that progression and underscores the importance of MDM in an increasingly AI-first world.
